Spoiler Summary/Synopsis:

In 850BC outside of Kyoto, a boy flees from a slaver. When the slaver goes to cut boy with a katana, Tsukasa intervenes. As such, the slaver attacks her, but she quickly defeats him. He flees and she tells the orphaned boy to look for a wealthy family in the city to get help.

To that end, the boy tells Tsukasa he chooses her. He considers her a heavenly being. Therefore, he vows to study and succeed at life. Reluctantly, Tsukasa agrees to “adopt” him, but insists he address her as “Nee-sama” instead addressing her as a mother. The boy (Ako) agrees and says he’ll become the “god of learning.”

In the present, Nasa studies hard to defeat Asimo in their contest. However, he is confident he will win and calls himself the reincarnation of the “god of learning”, Sugawara no Michizane.

Thoughts/Review:

Well, I didn’t expect another flashback to the past so quickly, but that’s what we got in Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 254. That aside, while this is the first time the name “Sugawara no Michizane” has come up, back in chapter 191, Tsukasa mentioned something that implied she knew him. Considering all of the other historical figures Tsukasa has met, I’m sure she did know him.

However, Ako from the flashback cannot be Sugawara no Michizane as he was not an orphan. So even though Sugawara no Michizane was involved in what was called the Ako incident, that was never his name. But for some reason, Hata-sensei wants to put some kind of linkage between the story Ako and Sugawara no Michizane that I don’t find in English written history of the man.

Anyway, I did like seeing boss-girl Tsukasa punching the slaver and then threatening him with death. Considering her own immortality and other skills, were this not a shounen title, we might have seen her kill the man.

Other than that, the chapter reminds us that Nasa has his contest with Asimo. I presume this means the flashbacks are now over. But we’ll see.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

In the end, Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 254 gave us another unexpected romp to the past while also reminding us of present events.
